ABCDE Monday Messenger

ABCDE – Better Together 

Greetings!  This is the one hundred and twenty eighth edition of the Monday Messenger.  Its purpose is to bring you current information about the ABCDE project and area.  ABCDE consists of local residents from Atlanta , Burden, Cambridge , Dexter and Eastern Cowley County working together for community development.  If you have anything to submit for the newsletter, please send it to shannonthom@hotmail.com.  

 

Cowley County Tourism Alliance

A reminder that the Cowley County Tourism Alliance will be meeting on Tuesday September 23 at noon at Mozitti's Restaurant in Ark City.  Sounds like the Cowley County Visitor's Guide might be ready by then - very exciting!  Please RSVP to Connie Kimsey by noon on Monday the 22nd.  Connie's contact information is: ac-cvb@arkcitychamber.org  620-442-0230.

Need Signs???

Bud Henderson, rural Eastern Cowley County resident, can make signs of all sizes and colors.  Bud has made me several signs over the years.  He is very fast and the signs look great.  His phone number is (620) 876-3464 or e-mail at ochend@sktc.net.

 

Grouse-Silver Creek Stakeholders:

   The Grouse-Silver Creek Watershed District #92 (GSW) board is inviting area producers, landowners and residents to a stakeholders meeting October 8, 2008.  The primary purpose of this meeting is to update the stakeholders on the progress that has been made in the watershed to preserve and protect our waters.  The GSW board has been active on cost-share conservation practices with producers interested in improving water quality. 

     GSW has been awarded a grant by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.  These grant funds are to be used to implement Best Management Practices for water quality improvement.  Representatives from KDHE will be in attendance to speak with stakeholders and seek information on how they can improve the WRAPS and granting process.

     The board of GSW #92 is seeking interested individuals to serve on a stakeholder leadership team which will assist the board in the decision-making process for the grant funds.  All interested parties are asked to sign up at the meeting or contact me to submit their name.  A mail-in ballot will be sent out for the voting process after the meeting.

    This meeting is scheduled for October 8, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Burden City Building.  Please plan to attend and support the GSW with their ever important conservation activities.  Refreshments will be provided.

Groceries in Burden

Burden now has a grocery store.  "The Pantry" is located at CJs, 427 Main St Burden, 620-438-2930   Hours are Mon to Sat 11AM to 9PM  and Sun 12 to 9PM.

Corn Maze Season  

The Dexter corn maze is now open at the Stone Barn Mercantile.  This year the maze is bigger and better than ever!!  The maze is open Saturdays 10-5 and Sundays 1-5 through November 1st.  It is also available for group tours by appointment.  Friday Night Frights (haunted corn maze) will begin in October. Located ½ mile north of Dexter on K15 Highway. Adults $4.00 and children $2.00.  www.stonebarnmercantile.com

Signup time for stone bridges tour
Registrations are now being taken for the annual Stone Treasures of Cowley County Tour. The tour, sponsored by the Arkansas City Area Arts Council, will be Saturday, Oct. 4. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in front of the former Burford Theater, 118 S. Summit, Ark City. The bus leaves at 9 a.m. and returns between 4 and 4:30 p.m.

You may be among the thousands who've enjoyed a bridge tour in the past, but it's time to go again. With tour guides Shannon Gackstatter and Teressa Swope Hatfield, over 17 stone arch natural limestone bridges of Cowley County will be highlighted. In addition some wonderful new treasures will also be featured, plus a visit to the Born Limestone Quarry in Silverdale.

The $54 tour fee includes the bus ride, guided tour and lunch for a very full, delightful and informational day.

Reservations are required, so call now to reserve your seat on the tour that Kansas Magazine rated the 9th Greatest Reason to Love Kansas. For information or to RSVP call the art council at (620) 442-5890.

Burden Celebration

Blackdog Festival

The annual Blackdog Festival will be held in Dexter on October 4-5.  Please see the website at www.blackdogfestival.com for more information.  A schedule is available on the website.  ABCDE is sponsoring the candidate forum at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Festival.

 

Do you have an idea for a business?

Jack has assisted 27 businesses in Eastern Cowley County since ABCDE joined QUAD in July of 2006.

Business owners and those with business ideas in Eastern Cowley County have access to a Professional Business Coach.  His name is Jack Newcomb and he is available for free, confidential advice and he will even come to you.  Through the ABCDE program, we have joined the QUAD EF project and have access to their business coach.  Many local banks, businesses, individuals and Cowley First are assisting to pay the QUAD membership fee through December of 2008.  For more information contact Jack at (620) 249-2108.
