Greetings!
This is the one
hundredth edition of the Monday Messenger. Its purpose is to
bring you current information about the ABCDE project and area.
ABCDE consists of local residents from
Atlanta
, Burden,
Cambridge
, Dexter and
Eastern
Cowley
County
working together for community development. If you have

ABCDE
Monthly Meeting – Tonight
The
monthly ABCDE meeting will be held tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the
Senior
Center
in Dexter. Some
agenda items include:

Cowley

Tourism
Alliance
The
Cowley County Tourism Alliance has postponed their meeting
originally scheduled for February 5th.
As soon as a date is set, it will be announced in the
Monday Messenger.
Symphony
in the Flint Hills
The
Symphony in the Flint Hills will be Saturday, June 14, with a rain
date of Sunday, June 15 in
Morris
County
. They're starting to take applications for volunteers at this
point. Volunteers will be contacted by phone for an interview
and job assignment.
Wichita
Women’s Fair
Flinthills
Aromatherapy will be heading to the Wichita Women's Fair Feb 15
-17. Wanda has offered to take any brochures with her to put in
the publicity racks at Century II. She will need them by Feb. 13.

Wonders of
Kansas
The
votes are in. More
than 24,000 people from all 50 states cast votes to determine
Kansas
’ most important natural or manmade wonders.
The
winners were announced by Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in a
ceremony at the capitol on Kansas Day, Jan. 29. The winners were
selected from 24 finalists; eight attractions were chosen because
the Kansas Sampler Foundation, organizer of the project, bases its
criteria on eight rural culture elements.
The
winners are (in alphabetical order): the Big Well, Greensburg;
Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, Barton and
Stafford counties; Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum,
Abilene; Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center, Hutchinson; Kansas
Underground Salt Museum, Hutchinson; Monument Rocks & Castle
Rock, Gove County; St. Fidelis Church (Cathedral of the Plains),
Victoria; and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Chase
County.

The
QUAD Annual Meeting will be held March 1st in
Atlanta
.
Cowley
County
is responsible for coordinating the meeting for the five county
area. The meeting will begin at 5:00 and feature an authentic
Chuckwagon meal, followed by entertainment by the Blackdog
Storytellers and a speaker. The cost is $15.00 per person
and reservations can be made by contacting Donna Martin.
Railroad
Heritage Days
The
First Annual Railroad Heritage Days will be held on April 19th.
Events will be featured in each community. For more
information contact Connie Kimsey at the Ark City Chamber.
20th
Annual Community Economic Development Conference
The
2008 CED Conference will be held, Thursday, April 10, in
El Dorado
,
Kansas
with an optional networking dinner on Wednesday, April 9. The
conference will explore community economic development as a
journey, not a destination. Participants will learn what
it takes to get a community READY; how to get SET
through leadership, planning, and focus; and how to GO
forth on a path to success. This conference is sponsored by
the Institute for Policy & Social Research at KU, the
K-State
Center
for Engagement and Community Development, and the Kansas
Department of Commerce.
The
keynote speaker will be Mark Drabenstott, Director of the RUPRI
(Rural Policy Research Institute) Center for Regional
Competitiveness. The
University
of
Missouri
and RUPRI created the Center for Regional Competitiveness in
September 2006 to be the nation’s leading source of information
and analytics on regional development in the 21st century.
The Center helps public and private leaders in regions craft
winning strategies in the global economy. Prior to RUPRI,
Dr. Drabenstott was the Director of the Center for the Study of
Rural America at the Federal Reserve Bank of
Kansas City
.
The

should be available starting in March.
ABCDE
Countrywide Excursion Tour and Garage Sales
The
ABCDE organization will again be sponsoring an area wide Garage
Sale
on April 26th. This year the day will also
include the Countrywide Excursion Tour also know as the Spring
Farm and Ranch Tour. The goal is to include the ABCDE area
communities, businesses and individuals who would like to have an
open house or garage sale. ABCDE will advertise and promote
the fun day.

County
since ABCDE joined QUAD.
Business
owners and those with business ideas in
Eastern
Cowley
County
have access to a Professional Business Coach. His name is
Jack Newcomb and he is available for free, confidential advice and
he will even come to you. Through the ABCDE program, we have
joined the QUAD EF project and have access to their business
coach. Many local banks, businesses and Cowley First
assisted to pay the QUAD membership fee through December of 2008.
