Dexter Helium Memorial Park Dedication

A ribbon-cutting and dedication of the new Dexter Helium Memorial Park was held Saturday, May 26, 2007.  The park began with the Dexter Caring Friends Club who saw a need to preserve one of Dexter's Helium well sites, located behind the Dexter Senior Citizens Building .  The project enlarged when the Dexter Economic Development Association envisioned a small pocket park at this site.

Helium was first discoverd in Dexter , Kansas in 1903.  Helium did not have any practical applications at the time, but by 1917 the federal government was sponsoring extensive research into the possibility of using helium in airships,  according to Answeres.com.  In 1923, a Helium Plant was constructed in Dexter that was not only used for helium production, but it served as a research center for nitrogen uses.

"We truley appreciate the cooperation of so many to make this dream a reality - the Dexter Senior Citizens, Masonic Lodge and Dexter City Council,"  said Carol Black, President of Dexter Economic Development.  "Jeff Powell designed the plantings and pathway, Bud Henderson constructed the signage, Pray Stone donated the limestone rocks and Jeff and Seth Martin created the corner stone to enhance the beauty of the well site."  Black also stated that funding was largely provided by the Dexter High School Alumni.

Summer Dinner Theatre – From Roger Moon

Hi you all precious people in Eastern Cowley County .  There is a piece of publicity we are trying to get out to everyone, so I am sending it to you, as well as schools and newspapers.

In short, I am part of starting a new summer dinner theatre program that will be doing one show this summer.  We don’t have a name for the theatre yet, but will remedy that by mid summer.  Our focus is in trying to give excellent theatre opportunities to our area actors, designers, and technicians, and quality summer dinner theatre to our audiences.  This summer we are doing one show, Seussical, a new Broadway musical based on the books and stories from Dr. Seuss, and focusing the proceeds toward renovation of the Marquee (old Fox/B&B movie) Theatre in Winfield.

Seussical will be performed at Winfield High School on July 6, 7, and 8.

Acting and singing auditions, along with technical signup and interviews, are this coming Monday and Tuesday, the 21st and 22nd at Winfield High School, and are open to children, youth and adults of all ages.  People are encouraged to call 620 229-6244 to sign up for an audition or interview time so they don’t have to wait.  We will provide music and reading material for the audition, but if people have a favorite song they feel confident with and have the music to, we invite them to mark a chorus or 16-measure section and bring it.  Please bring a recent picture of any size that we can keep.

Rehearsals will begin immediately after Memorial Day and be mostly during the weekday evenings, though leads may have rehearsals during the day.

If you know of any young people or families interested in auditioning, or if anyone has questions, do let me know.

Let me know if there is ever anything we can do together.  You folks over there are wonderful, and I’m so glad I got to know what was going on over there with the ABCDE development of that precious part of our county.

I look forward to hearing from you, and to seeing you June 7th.

Always, Roger Moon

Flint Hills Tourism Coalition

At the May meeting, the FHTC several changes took place. Most noticeable, the chair position was reassigned. Linda Craghead has headed this position for the last nine months, and due to her opening her own business and several time consuming responsibilities, she didn’t feel that she’d be able to give the coalition the time it needed, so she’s stepped into the At-Large position and Dr. William Smith, from Emporia State University has taken the Chair position. Also voted on Friday, was the appointment of Bob Cole, Pottawattamie County , as Vice Chair. The remaining Executive Committee members are as follows: Connie Kimsey, Cowley County, Secretary; Karen Hibbard, Riley County, Treasurer; Bruce Wells, Flint Hills RC&D & Becky Blake, Kansas Dept. of Travel & Tourism, Ex-offico.

Additionally, the standing committees were decided as follows: Marketing/Branding Committee, Financial Committee, Heritage Task Force Committee, Education/Outreach Committee and Marketable Roadways Committee. Anyone wishing to become a part of any of these committees is encouraged to contact one of the Executive Committee members.

The five winners from the Flint Hills Lottery were announced. There were two from Wichita , and one each from Kansas City , Garfield and Newton . Three of the winners chose the Outdoor Hunting and Fishing prize, one chose the Working Ranch prize and one chose the Arts/Cultural prize.

There will be no June meeting, so the next FHTC meeting will be July 20th at Council Grove.
