National Geographic Magazine Features Kansas Flint Hills

It’s finally here! The April issue of the National Geographic was delivered to members of the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition Friday at the monthly meeting. The feature is 22 pages which includes 19 pages of beautiful pictures by Jim Richardson. The article by Verlyn Klinkenborg features our land, not the tourism or culture. It’s really a geography, history and biology lesson all rolled into one. To see the pictures and read the article, go to http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0704/feature5/.

Flint Hills Tourism Coalition Hosts Legislators

Last Monday night, the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition hosted our state Legislators for an evening of celebrating the Flint Hills. There were pictures from Jim Richardson from the National Geographic Magazine along with a ranch roundup series from Kansas native Judith Sabatini. Legislators had a home-grown supper of Kansas products and listened as Jim Richardson spoke about our Flint Hills.  Jim shared what he saw as a photographer and what he saw as a Kansas native. One of the things he pointed out was that we who live in Kansas have become used to playing second fiddle to the Rockies and Ozarks. But he made it very clear that we need to stand up with pride and acknowledge that our Flint Hills are just as beautiful as either of these. And, Kansas is the only place in the world where they exist.  Each Legislator left with a signed copy of the National Geographic Magazine and hopefully an understanding of what the FHTC is trying to accomplish

Exciting Events from the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition

Along with the excitement of the National Geographic Magazine, the FHTC has several exciting events to coincide with the magazine feature. To complement the magazine spread and further celebrate the Flint Hills, the Travel &Tourism Division of the Kansas Department of Commerce has coordinated a year-long traveling exhibit that will bring more than 30 prints of Richardson ’s work to communities across Kansas . For a complete listing of tour stops, visit the Travel & Tourism Division’s Web site at www.TravelKS.com.

The exhibit will be touring the ABCDE communities April 30-May 6. The week will start Monday evening, April 30 with a Landowner/Rancher/Farmer night that will include a special showing of the exhibit, supper and speaker at the old gym in Cambridge . Jim Hoy will be the speaker.  It will then move to Central High School for Tuesday and Wednesday, Dexter Old Gym on Thursday and Friday and end up in Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday. We will need help with the set-up, tear-down and hosts during the open hours of the exhibit. If you would be willing to help out, please contact Julie at countrycookin@sktc.net or 394-2794.
