Symphony in the Flint Hills Experience

Symphony in the Flint Hills was Saturday in Wabaunsee County. After getting 2 inches of rain the night before, over 500 Symphony board members, staff and volunteers came together and provided the patrons, sponsors and general admission ticket holders a beautiful experience. The setting was fabulous (but what do you expect from our Flint Hills?!) and the music was grand.

Several ABCDE members helped with various aspects of the Symphony. In retail sales were Wanda Headrick, Donna Martin, Marjorie Snyder and Joe and Judy Haggard. Driving vans with the members of the Kansas City Symphony were Gary & Phillip Headrick. Julie Headrick was in token sales.

Mark your calendars for next year's Symphony in Morris County, June 14, 2008. It would be great to have an even larger ABCDE presence next year.

From the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition

Dear Coalition members:

If you have not received the following from the Kansas Tourism industry otherwise, please consider this your invitation to participate:

All of us in the tourism industry are linked to travel and tourism entities across the state of Kansas in one way or another.  We all see the impact that travelers have when they come through our communities and spend tourism dollars. Whether they are eating at our restaurants or staying at our hotels, attending our museums or attractions or making
their way across the backroads of Kansas , we play an important role in this issue.

Below is a link to a survey to collect travel and tourism information on what our industry thinks about the state's tourism and how we can improve upon it.

Please take a few moments and let the tourism industry know your feedback for this very important initiative that they are taking to Topeka in the 2008 session - The Kansas Tourism Initiative (KTI).

Thank you for your time and participation, we will not know how we stand
as an industry unless we ask the questions that will help us determine where we need to focus our efforts. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=741513623602
.

Thanks very much for your willingness to invest the few minutes in this survey that will have a profound effect on how we plan for the future. This survey has been sent to thousands of other Kansas businesses and county/municipal managers - add your voice!

Thank you,
Bill, Chair, Flint Hills Tourism Coalition

8 Wonders of Kansas

(Reprinted from an e-mail by Deb Zeinrer)

INMAN - The Brookville Hotel at Abilene, the Chase County Courthouse in Cottonwood Falls, the Eisenhower Center in Abilene, Keeper of the Plains in Wichita and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve/Flint Hills in Chase County were honored Friday when they were among the top 24 finalists in a contest to determine the 8 Wonders of Kansas. These sites are within the 22-county area of the Flint Hills represented by the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition. The contest and finalists were announced by Marci Penner of the Kansas Sampler Foundation in Inman on June 1. Van Rothenberger of Osborne, a member of the Sampler Foundation’s Kansas Explorers group, initiated the idea.

“My hope is that this project allows Kansans to exhibit more pride in their state, in who they are and what they  have,” Rothenberger said.

The top 8 Wonders will be determined by the public, who can vote for their favorite wonders at 8wonders.org from now until Dec. 31, 2007. On Jan. 29, 2008, Kansas Day, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will announce the top 8 Wonders as Kansas.

Nominees are the:

  1. Arikaree Breaks, Cheyenne County;
  2. Ball of Twine, Cawker City;
  3. Big Brutus, West Mineral;
  4. Big Well, Greensburg;
  5. Brookville Hotel, Abilene;
  6. Chase County Courthouse, Chase County;
  7. Cheyenne Bottoms/Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, Barton & Stafford counties;
  8. Cimmaron National Grassland, Morton County;
  9. Constitution Hall State Historic Site, Lecompton;
  10. John Steuart Curry murals, Topeka;
  11. Davis Memorial, Hiawatha;
  12. Eisenhower Center, Abilene;
  13. Fort Larned National historic Site, Pawnee County;
  14. Garden of Eden, Lucas;
  15. Gyp Hills Scenic Drive, Barber County;

  22. St. Fidelis Church, Cathedral of the Plains, Victoria;
  23. St. Mary’s Church, St. Benedict
  24. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve/Flint Hills, Chase County.

Each of the 24 finalists was selected based upon what Penner refers to as the 8 Rural Culture Elements: architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography, history and people. The Brookville Hotel represents cuisine; the Eisenhower Center people and history; the Keeper of the Plains art and customs, the Chase County Courthouse architecture and the TPNP/Flint Hills a geographical representation.

Penner hopes the project will help to educate both Kansans and others about Kansas, encouraging people to see each of the sites in person.

To vote, go to 8wonders.org between June 1 and Dec. 31 and vote online for

your top eight choices. Each email address may be used up to three times for voting purposes.  If you are unable to vote online, call 620-585-2374 for a printed ballot.

LEGISLATURE OKs ENTERPRISE FACILITATION® FUNDING

 TOPEKA -- (April 27, 2007) -- The legislature today gave final approval to legislation that will provide a reliable source of funding for a successful rural development program, sending the measure to the governor. She is expected to sign it into law.

"For our state's least-developed counties, Enterprise Facilitation has proven to be a successful program in starting and nurturing new businesses," said Senator Derek Schmidt, R-Independence, who sponsored the measure.

"This will give some certainty to the Enterprise Facilitation projects so they can focus on doing their work instead of worrying whether they will be funded year-to-year."

The new provision of law is included in legislation that extends the rural development tax credit program. The provision requires that 5 percent of the funds raised by sale of rural development tax credits statewide be distributed among the enterprise facilitation projects. If all tax credits are sold, that would generate $30,000 per year to help sustain each project, which is about half the total annual cost of running an enterprise facilitation program.

In Southeast Kansas, the Quad County Enterprise Facilitation project has helped nurture business start-ups and economic development in Chautauqua, Elk, Greenwood and Woodson counties. Wilson and eastern Cowley counties also have participated in the project. The Quad County project has nurtured about 100 business startups since its inception in July 2002.
