ABCDE Monday Messenger

 ABCDE – Better Together 

Greetings!  This is the seventy fifth edition of the Monday Messenger.  Its purpose is to bring you current information about the ABCDE project and area.  ABCDE consists of local residents from Atlanta , Burden, Cambridge , Dexter and Eastern Cowley County working together for community development.  If you have anything to submit for the newsletter, please send it to shannonthom@hotmail.com

 

KDDA Training

The Kansas Downtown Development Association is bringing retail training to our area on August 2nd.  The training “Million Dollar Marketing on a Shoestring Budget” will be presented by Barbara Wold, an internationally know speaker in the retail and consumer industries.   The session will be held from 8:30 – 3:30 at the American Legion in Winfield.  Each KDDA organization is eligible to send four participants.  ABCDE is a KDDA organization.  If you would like to attend or for more information, please contact Shannon Martin, (620) 876-3467 or shannonthom@hotmail.com.

 

Atlanta Labor Day Celebration

The annual Labor Day Celebration will be held in Atlanta September 1st through the 3rd.  It features many events including Lawn Mower Races, BBQ, Youth Rally, Parade, Craft Show/Farmer’s Market, Carnival, Barnyard Olympics and many more.  Fore more information contact Julie at (620) 394-2794.

A celebration dinner will be held for the end of the ABCDE Governor’s Pilot Project on Saturday, October 20th.  The dinner will feature products made in Cowley County and will hold much fun and surprises!!  Watch for more information in the Monday Messenger.

Jack has assisted 20 businesses in Eastern Cowley County since ABCDE joined QUAD.

Through 2007, business owners and those with business ideas have access to a Professional Business Coach.  His name is Jack Newcomb and he is available for free, confidential advice and he will even come to you.  Through the ABCDE program, we have joined the QUAD EF project and have access to their business coach.  Many local banks, businesses and Cowley First assisted to pay the QUAD membership fee through December of 2007.  For more information contact Jack at (620) 249-2108.

Flint Hills Tourism Coalition

Please come to Council Grove for the July 27 meeting of the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition.  The Coalition will be meeting at the World Famous Hays House Restaurant -- 150 years old this year and still the " . . . oldest, continuously operated restaurant west of the Mississippi River .”  If you plan to attend, please RSVP to C. Did You Know??

That the Hewins Park Pavilion in Cedar Vale was recently nominated for Historic National Register Listing?  The pavilion was constructed in 1912 and has amazing architecturally significant construction.  Stop by the next time you visit our ABCDE neighbor.

July Flint Hills Training Workshop

The July Flint Hills Training workshop on Wednesday, July 18, is titled: “Web Site Development for Individual Small Businesses and Attractions” and will feature a panel of web developers.

The panel will include: Jim Zeiner, Cottonwood Falls ; Mike Wampler, Winfield, and Allen Walker, Emporia . Dr. Bill Smith will be the moderator.

The workshop, which will be held from 1:30-4 p.m. in the Roe Cross Conference Room of Cremer Hall on the ESU campus, is one of a series of workshops held in 2007 that focuses on tourism services in the Flint Hills.

The monthly series of workshops developed by the CBED was done in partnership with the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition, the Flint Hills Resource Conservation and Development AgriTourism Initiative, and the ESU School of Business Small Business Development Center .

Registration information is available at the CBED Workshop website at http://www.emporia.edu/business/cbedworkshops.php, by calling (620) 341-5345, or by sending an e-mail to Dr. Smith at: wsmith@emporia.edu. There is a $10 fee for participants, payable at the door. All interested persons are encouraged to attend, with or without calling ahead.

Advertising Opportunity at Bluegrass

Flinthills Aromatherapy is producing a tabloid to be distributed for free at the Walnut Valley Festival. If you are interested in placing an ad featuring your Eastern Cowley County business, please contact Julie at 394-27914 or countrycookin@sktc.net. A business card sized ad will be $20. They’re expecting 14,000 people at the Festival this year!

Dexter BBQ

The annual Dexter BBQ will be held on July 14.  Events include:

Parade – Noon

Kid’s and Adult games, Volleyball, Car Show – Afternoon

DEDA Sponsored Pie Tasting – 1:00 – 5:00, Community Building

BBQ Meal – 5:00

Watermelon Feed - 6:00

Dance – 8:30

Attention ABCDE Members!

We are looking into starting a Marketing Co-op through ABCDE and our members have the opportunity to have the first run at it!

We will be placing an ad through the Winfield Courier in two fair-related issues. The first will be the Events Schedule and will come out July 26th, the second will be the Results Tab and will come out mid-August. The same ad will run both times (We get a price break for the second run.) and will be approx 2 column widths by 7 inches in height.

The cost is $20 for each business listed. I will need all your information by this Thursday, July 12th.

Flint Hills Tourism Coalition Workshop

The Flint Hills Tourism Coalition is sponsoring a workshop in Winfield on July 12th (New Date).  Entitled “Marketing and Networking”, the workshop will be held from 1:30 – 4:00 at Baden Square and there is a $10 fee.  Gary and Wanda Headrick will be speaking at the training.  For more information contact, Bill Smith at (620) 341-5729 or wsmith@emporia.edu.

July Garden Parties

Based on the book Miss Twiggley’s Garden Party, the Gathering Place in Dexter is hosting a children’s garden party for ages 5-10.  The $12.00 charge includes lunch, take home gift, goodie bag and a visit by Miss Twiggley.  The event will be held on July 17th, from 10:30 – 12:30.  Parents are encouraged to accompany their children.

On July 24, area Junior and High School girls are invited to attend a Diva Garden Party.  The $20.00 charge will include lunch, makeup demonstrations, fashion show, and goodie bag.  The event will be held from 10:30-12:30.

USDA Community Leadership Training

A USDA Community Leadership Training will be held in Newton during July facilitated by Department of Commerce, USDA, Federal home Loan bank and KSU Extension.  The theme is Empowering Community Leadership.  Each session will be held from 8:00 – 5:00 on July 11, 18, 25.  Members of ABCDE are encouraged to attend.  There is a cost of $65 per person, which will be covered by SKT.  Please contact Lonnie if you are interested in attending.
