ABCDE Monday Messenger

ABCDE – Better Together

 

Greetings!  This is the forty-second edition of the Monday Messenger.  Its purpose is to bring you current information about the ABCDE project and area.  ABCDE consists of local residents from Atlanta, Burden, Cambridge, Dexter and Eastern Cowley County working together for community development.  If you have anything to submit for the newsletter, please send it to shannonthom@hotmail.com.  Thanks – Shannon Thom Martin, ABCDE Chairman

 

Next ABCDE Monthly Meeting

FREE Business Coaching

It’s free to you!!  For the next 13 months, business owners and those with business ideas have access to a Professional Business Coach.  His name is Jack Newcomb and he is available for free, confidential advice and he will even come to you.  Through the ABCDE program, we have joined the Quad EF project and have access to their business coach.  Many local banks, businesses and the county assisted to pay the Quad membership fee through December of 2007.  For more information contact Jack at (620) 249-2108.

Christmas is Coming!!

 

Several Christmas events will be held in the ABCDE area over the next month.

Atlanta - Atlanta will be hosting their annual Community Christmas Party, Sat. Dec. 2. The event starts at 7:30 that evening, with a program and a visit from Santa. Everyone is invited and asked to bring a dozen cookies to share.

Burden – Santa will be in Burden twice this year.  The Santa Train will arrive on December 2 on the Main St. track from 3:30 to 4:00....You can visit with Santa and pick up a bag of goodies.

 

The Burden Area Chamber of Commerce will also be hosting Santa on December 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  He will be handing out bags of goodies at Melissa Fraley’s building at the corner of Main and 160 Highway. 

 

Dexter – “Christmas in the Valley” will be sponsored by the Dexter Economic Development Association on December 2nd.  Events include a Cowboy Soup Supper, many downtown evening activities, and a Cowboy Christmas Ball.  See attached flyer.

A benefit for Kermit Headrick is being planned   If you are willing to assist, please let Julie know and she will pass it on to the organizers.

The ABCDE organization has an official website at www.cowleynet.com.  The website features a calendar of events and information on the Governor’s Pilot Project. 

 

Next ABCDE Monthly Meeting

 

The December monthly meeting will be held on December 4th at 7:00 p.m. at the Atlanta Community Building.

 

Flint Hills Tourism Coalition

 

Five ABCDE members attended the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition meeting last week.  Ted Eubanks, travel consultant to the group, spoke about promoting the 22 counties of Kansas in the Flint Hills.  The ABCDE organization is working with the Arkansas City and Winfield CVB’s on the effort to make the Flint Hills of Kansas as well known as the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

ECCRC Workshops

The ECCRC has a series of workshops being held this fall.  For a complete listing, read the Advocate or find more information at http://www.freewebs.com/eccrc/index.htm.

Kermit Headrick

 

Kermit Headrick, an ABCDE member and board member, is home and doing well after hospitalization.  He is going to rehab and making improvements.  His home address is 23465 2nd, Atlanta, KS  67008.

Flint Hills Tourism Coalition

 

A regional tourism project to promote the Flint Hills will be holding a meeting in Arkansas City this Friday, November 17.  It will be held at Brick’s Restaurant at 10:00 a.m.  Lunch will be provided for $10.00.  For more information contact, Connie Kimsey, Arkansas City CVB Director (620) 442-0230.

 

Agritourism Scholarships

The Agriculture Marketing Division of the Kansas Department of Commerce is sponsoring $30,000 in scholarships to help Kansas agritourism operators attend conferences, seminars and educational tours. Funds may be used to offset the following costs related to the trip: vehicle rental, lodging, airfare, motor coach costs, consultation fees charged by the business being visited, admission fees to model attractions or events, insurance for trip participants for the duration of the trip or shared educational materials purchased for or during the trip.   Collaborative proposals involving multiple regional or market group partners will receive priority designation.   Applications will be accepted until Nov. 15 and are available online at www.kansasagritourism.org. Awards will be announced by Dec. 15.

Sporting Clay Shoot

The Dexter Civic Club is sponsoring a Sporting Clay Shoot on Sunday, November 19th from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  It will be held at the Dexter Fire Station, just north of Dexter on K-15 Highway.  The cost is $15 for 40 shots and prizes will be awarded in several categories.  A chili feed will also be held, with proceeds going towards community improvements.  For more information contact Brian Kuntz at 876-5845.

Visit Hotchkin’s Woodcarving in Burden for a unique holiday shopping experience.  Kris has many hand-carved items and Christmas ornaments.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner

On November 18th at 5:00 p.m., a community Thanksgiving Dinner will be given by the Dexter area churches.  This free event will be held in the community building featuring a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanksgiving Boxes

Dexter area churches are fixing Thanksgiving boxes for the community.  If you would like to donate food, know of someone who will need a box, or like to help in any way, contact Betty Steele at the Dexter Christian Church, 876-5683.

Holiday Food Boxes

Seventy-Five Thanksgiving Holiday Food Boxes will be given out on November 18th at 11:30 at ECCRC, 408 Hwy. 160 in Burden.   Volunteers are needed to help box food. Donations of certain food products are needed. Please contact ECCRC for the updated list of needs.

ABCDE Monthly Meeting

 

An ABCDE meeting will be held tonight, Monday, November 6, at the Bud and Jan Nitschke home.  The regular membership meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m.  A board meeting will be held beginning at 6:15 for board members.  This is to meet the required number of board meetings according to the bylaws and for discussion on progress of the project.

Benefit Breakfast

Saturday, November 11. Dexter  Senior Center. 8:00 a.m.  - 10:00 a.m.  Come visit with members of the Shadid Family. A presentation about the progress of Lighthouse Library will be presented featuring the Cowley County Road Crews. A 3-D Demo. of the proposed library will be shown. The Business Plan will be available for interested financial institutions with members in attendance. Anyone is welcome to view the business plan. A scrapbook about the library will be on display.  The Lighthouse Stained Glass Window that was donated for the front window by a Wichita resident will be on display. Friends of Lighthouse Library membership information will be explained.  A special Speaker will be present.  The breakfast will be free and tax-deductible donations will be accepted. Holiday Food Boxes
