ABCDE
Monday Messenger
ABCDE – Better Together Greetings! This is the twentieth edition of the Monday Messenger. Its purpose is to bring you current information about the ABCDE project and area. If you have anything to submit for the newsletter, please send it to me at shannonthom@hotmail.com. Next Meeting in August The July ABCDE meeting will be cancelled due to the date following on July 3rd. Our next regular meeting will be held in August. Please let me know if you have any items for the agenda.
Atlanta
Farmer’s Market and Swap Meet Atlanta will be holding a Farmers’ Market and Swap Meet July 1st from 5:30-7pm. It will be located downtown, in the street just South of the Branding Iron Café. We hope to have it the first Saturday of each month, at least through October. There will be no booth fees charged. So if you have something to sell or trade, come on up!! Pretty much everything’s allowed – food, crafts, vehicles, equipment, even critters. (The state has restrictions on rabbits, cats and dogs being sold/swapped, so those animals are not allowed.) And if you don’t have anything to sell or swap, come on up and we’ll send you home with something! If anyone is interested in becoming a vendor, please contact Julie Headrick at 620-394-2794. More
From Julie…. Also, I heard some nice things at Farmers’ Market in Winfield about ABCDE. I was told by David Seaton (Courier/Traveler owner/editor) that we are considered the most productive economic development group in the state, maybe even the nation, at the present time. He’s on several boards, including the Cowley First board that Phillip and Vicki approached, and is very impressed with what’s been accomplished by our group. It is nice to see that our work is being noticed by not only our neighbors, but even state and nation (according to David) wide. So let’s give ourselves a pat on the back and keep moving forward! (Taken from an e-mail from Julie Headrick)
Dinner
and Music The
Gathering Place in downtown Dexter will be open on Friday, June 30
starting at 5:30 p.m. for an evening meal and entertainment.
Mexican food will be served and Micah Thom will sing starting at
6:00 p.m. Micah is 11 years
old and was recently a finalist in the Rubbermaid Idol contest held
during the Winfield Country Roundup.
(Of course, I think she is great!!
Proud mom - Shannon) Quad Enterprise Facilitation At the ABCDE meeting last Monday, the organization voted to join the Quad Enterprise Facilitation (EF) project. A service of the project is access to a business coach, Jack Newcomb. Jack will be available to anyone in the ABCDE area starting July 1st. He will provide free, confidential businesses coaching. A training about EF will be held on July 18th at 6:30 p.m. in Burden. The ABCDE area must provide 6-10 interested individuals to serve on the Quad EF board. It meets on the second Thursday of each month. If you are interested in serving on the Quad board, please send me an e-mail. Dexter BBQ The annual Dexter BBQ will be held on July 8th. A fun run will start the day at 8:00 a.m. At noon, you can enjoy a parade followed by kids and adult games. The famous BBQ meal will begin at 5:00 and a dance will conclude the evening at 8:30. There will be several other activities throughout the day. The Dexter Economic Development Association will sponsor a Pie Tasting from 1-5 with an old fashion Pie Auction at 6:00 p.m. End of the Trail Prairie Event I heard that the first End of the Trail Prairie Event was a huge success. People came from all over to see the longhorn cattle drive, eat an authentic chuckwagon meal and be entertained by a real cowboy singer. This is a great event for our area with the potential to bring visitors from around the state and nation. More events are scheduled throughout the summer. www.cowboycrk.com Burma Shave Signs Have you driven into Cambridge lately? The Stockman Café has put Burma Shave signs on Highway 160 on both the west and east sides. They are really fun to read. Good job Cambridge!! BAK It sounds like Burden was a great host for BAK (Bike Across Kansas). I read in the paper many great things about the town’s hospitality and heard from a friend on the trip that Burden went above and beyond as a host. My friend said that she really enjoyed the woodcarver’s shop. Upcoming Activities/Events July 1 Atlanta Farmer’s Market and Swap Meet July 8 Dexter BBQ
