ABCDE – Better Together

Greetings!  This is the twenty-fifth edition of the Monday Messenger.  Its purpose is to

bring you current information about the ABCDE project and area.  If you have anything to submit for the newsletter, please send it to me at shannonthom@hotmail.com.

National Night Out

Atlanta, Burden, Cambridge, and Dexter will be holding National Night Out celebrations on this Tuesday, August 1st.  Come out and enjoy the evening and your neighbors.

Next ABCDE Meeting

The next ABCDE meeting will be held on August 14th in Atlanta.  It will be held in the community building at 7:00 p.m.  Please send me your agenda items.

Cover Girl and Boy

I was thrilled to see friendly faces on the cover of the newest Cowley County Farmer Rancher newspaper.  Mary and Kermit Headrick are featured with great photos and a lengthy article.  I also read that Katie Hedges (Marian’s daughter) from Burden won a National FFA Scholarship.  Way to go.

New ABCDE Member

I would like to welcome Ryan Rising as a new ABCDE member.  Ryan lives in Winfield and has family roots in Eastern Cowley County.  He has a law degree and will be teaching Business Law for Southwestern College this fall.  He is interested in Youth and Entrepreneurship and will be assisting with that goal.  Welcome.

Movie Night

The Black Dog Festival will be holding their second movie night on August 12th in downtown Dexter.  An old fashion movie will be shown at the tennis courts at dark.  Concessions will be available.

Focus Groups

Jean Warta from the Department of Commerce will be around later this month to conduct Focus Group discussions about the area.  The purpose is to gain insight on public opinions for the marketing plan.  A chairman is organizing each group – Julie in Atlanta, Marian in Burden/Cambridge, Donna in Dexter and Vicki for the Business Group.  Jean has requested that the focus group participants are not ABCDE members.  She has already collected our information from the Visioning Planning Session held earlier.  For more information, please feel free to contact me.

Michael Martin Murphey Coming to Dexter

The Dexter Economic Development Association is excited to announce that Michael Martin Murphey will be performing in a concert in Dexter on Tuesday, September 26.  It will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Dexter School Gym. The concert will kick-off the Black Dog Festival.  Tickets are on sale, they are $20.00 per seat.  If you would like a ticket, please let me know.

Ideas

Carol Black is full of ideas.  She often sends me ideas for our organization.  We are lucky to have such a good thinker in our group.  Carol has suggested that ABCDE form a Marketing Association to market our local products in a collaborative effort.  I will put this on the agenda for our next meeting.  Be thinking about it and we can discuss it then.

Let Me Introduce Jack

The ABCDE organization is now officially a member of the Quad Enterprise Facilitation (EF) project.  This entitles us to access to their Business Coach Jack Newcomb.  Several of our ABCDE members have also joined the EF board.  EF is a proven business development process.  If you would like to visit with Jack - his phone number is (620) 249-2108 or e-mail jack@quadcounty.net.   He provides free, confidential business coaching to anyone in Eastern Cowley County, if they are an ABCDE member or not.

County Fair

This week is the start of the Cowley County Fair.  Many ABCDE members and their families are involved with the fair each year.  I hope that everyone has a good week and good luck to the 4H kids.

New Business in Burden

Sheena Frailey has opened Salon Bliss at 504 Main in Burden.  The salon is open Tuesday through Saturday.  Her hours are Tuesday through Thursday 9-6, Friday 9-5 and Saturday 8-12.

From Julie…

The Atlanta Labor Day Committee is looking for sponsors/donations for the raffle. If you'd be interested in donating an item (product, gift certificate, tickets, etc.) for our Labor Day Raffle, we'd really appreciate your help. Cash donations are also being accepted.  If you have any questions, contact Phillip or Julie Headrick

Jean Warta and ABCDE Marketing Plan

As you know, we have been working with Jean Warta from the Department of Commerce on a Marketing Plan for the ABCDE area.  The next and almost final step is to conduct focus group studies of residents and business owners.  Three resident focus groups will meet - one in Atlanta, one in Burden (for Burden and Cambridge) and one in Dexter.  A fourth focus group will consist of business owners in the ABCDE area.  We need a volunteer to chair each of these focus groups for a total of four volunteers.  The focus groups will be held on August 22 and 23 and will last one hour each.  If you are interested in being a group chairman, please contact me by e-mail or phone (620) 876-3467.

Atlanta Farmer’s Market and Swap Meet

Atlanta will be holding a Farmers’ Market and Swap Meet the first Saturday of each month from 5:30-7pm. It will be located downtown, in the street just South of the Branding Iron Café. There are no booth fees charged. If anyone is interested in becoming a vendor, please contact Julie Headrick at 620-394-2794.  I heard the first one was very successful!!  Great idea Atlanta!!

Meeting Dates

It seems that we are having some problems with the days of our meetings.  Although the first Monday of each month has worked so far, it was a conflict in July with Independence Day.  Our regular August meeting date will be the same night as the Cowley County Fair Livestock Auction, which will involve many of our members (according to e-mails).  And looking ahead, the September meeting is on Labor Day.  I think that most of the other months work.  Does anyone have a suggestion for August and September?

Quad Enterprise Facilitation

Personal Invitation

Grady and I are getting married in a private ceremony on July 15th at our small country church near Dexter.  I would like to invite all of our ABCDE friends to the reception/dinner/dance that evening at 7:00 p.m.   It will be held at the Stone Barn, ˝ mile north of Dexter.   Please dress casual and bring a lawn chair.   No gifts, please – just come enjoy the evening with us.

From Beej…

Rubbermaid Tours

The Burden Area Chamber of Commerce had a booth at the Rubbermaid Welcome Fair today.  Although it was not a big attendance group all 12 families have commited to moving here.  We had pictures of all our vacancies here in Burden and a couple of the properties are being looked at closely.  We are hoping they go through with their plans to move to the area. With one more who hasn't been here as yet, but is following our website closely, interested in another one.  I put this gentleman in contact with Joe Haggard.  A couple of the locals did tell Ken that they were hearing good things about ABCDE and they appreciated what the group was attempting to do.

From Lonnie……
Rubbermaid Tours

The Rubbermaid facility in Centerville (IA) is being shut-down.  The work (200-400 employees) from that plant is going to be relocated to the Winfield facility.  Plant management has worked to develop recruitment visits for the Iowa workers.  Buses will bring people to Cowley County on three separate weekends.  Opportunities for tours of the plant, communities, schools and area housing will be offered June 23-24, July 7-8 and July 14-15.  Area businesses/organizations are invited to be part of a welcoming resource fair each of the designated Saturdays 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at Winfield High School.  There is no fee to participate.  Register with either the Ark City or Winfield Area Chambers of Commerce today.

Should ABCDE have a booth at the resource fair???  If you are interested in setting up or working at the booth, please contact Lonnie or myself.
