WORKSHOP FOR ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEWERS

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Kansas Flint Hills, with their distinctive scenic landscape, have long harbored a unique and significant culture within the timeline of American history. Preserving this nationally significant heritage through the collection and preservation of the Kansas Flint Hills' heritage stories and oral histories is a goal of the Flint Hills Heritage Task Force.

To that end, the Flint Hills Heritage Task Force - part of the 22-county Flint Hills Tourism Coalition - will conduct a workshop on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, to train potential interviewers for the Flint Hills Heritage Stories oral history project.

Registration information is available at the CBED Workshop website at
http://www.emporia.edu/business/cbedworkshops.php, by calling (620) 341-5345, or by sending an e-mail to Dr. Smith at: wsmith@emporia.edu. Registration by January 10 is requested and there is a $5 fee for participants. The Workshop will be held in the Roe Cross Conference Room, Cremer Hall on the ESU campus, from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., January 17, 2007.

Small Town Wonder-ful

The Stockman’s Café in Cambridge is open every day for breakfast and lunch.  The local cowboys open the restaurant each morning around 5:00 for coffee.  The cook comes in to make breakfast around 7:00.  A while back the cowboys wanted coffee earlier than seven, so the owner gave them a key.  (I bet this wouldn’t happen in many towns).

Hello to all from Rochester, MN

Today we thought we'd have some answers to share from the doctors, but alas, they are still puzzled with what is going on with Kermit. The lumbar puncture (Spinal tap) procedure went well yesterday morning and he got thru the day without additional headache pain - still has the left side pain in and above the eye area most days - the eye tests all turned out good, so n apparent damage there.

When we met with the neurologist today he was not satisfied with just treating Kermit for CMS (central nervous system) vasculitis without further testing. So an MRI with and without contrast is scheduled for 7 a.m. tomorrow morning (Sat) to determine if there is a likely spot for doing a brain biopsy. After the MRI we will go to Des Moines to LaGaua's for the weekend. Then come back up here Monday to meet with the neurologist again and get his determination on what needs to be done further.

If a brain biopsy is necessary it will be a hospital procedure of at least 1 day. So we hope we can get things scheduled early next week. Three - four days is becoming 3 - 4 weeks! We are so anxious to be home again.

Thanks again for al of your support.

Kermit, Mary and LaGaya

From Kermit’s Daughter…

Hello again,

We still have no definite answers, but the neurologist's 2 leading suspects

are familial hemiplegic migraine and vasculitis (hence a lumbar puncture for

further testing).  They are still waiting results on the biopsy of the right

temporal artery.  The neurologist said he had never seem such a prominent

family history of migraine headache suffers.

On Thursday the 7th, they are to be back at Mayo Clinic at 7:30 a.m. for a

lumbar puncture then to meet with the rheumotologist again on Friday

afternoon and the neurologist again on Monday, December 11.  They will try

to get the neurology appt. moved to Thursday or Friday the 7th or 8th.

Everyone's help and concern is very much appreciated.  Thanks a millon.

LaGaya and family
